“Education, higher education, is essential,” said former MLB player Randy Winn ’96 as he shared his story during the first-ever Black Excellence, Success, and Trailblazing (BEST) college prep program in January 2021. In partnership with the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Admission Office, BEST brought together faculty, staff, students, and alumni in a two-day virtual program to mentor Black students and encourage the pursuit of higher education.
“For me, being a student gave me a chance to go to Santa Clara, which gave me a chance to play in the major leagues, which changed my life,” Winn explained. In serving as mentors, he and fellow Broncos ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Regent Latanya Hilton ’96, Helen Kassa ’20, Katrina Logan J.D. ’08, and NeChele Rucker J.D. ’09, inspired beyond their words.
